Are you passionate about food, and want to make your thoughts and experiences come alive on the page? Are you curious about the different styles and formats in which people write about food? Then join my Course: Introduction to Food Writing this coming January in Berlin (Germany)!
Food is deeply embedded in our lives and imaginations. There is something that makes the memory of home rise up with the steam of boiled potatoes, and makes us see the world in a dish of curry. We exchange secrets like trading cards about the greengrocer whose peaches melt on our tongues like pieces of sunshine, and the restaurant that seems like a place in our heart. We yearn for our grandmother’s cake that did not just taste of vanilla and almonds, but of her kitchen, her apron, her smile.
In this course, you will get to know different formats of food writing – memoirs, essays, travel writing, reviews, recipe writing – and work on your personal style and focus in the diverse world of food. We will read and discuss the writing of celebrated authors such as M.F.K. Fisher, Michael Pollan and Elizabeth David, and investigate their methods.
You will learn the craft of tasting and practice writing delightful memories, mouth-watering recipes, and thoughtful commentaries on food, food culture and the food system. We will workshop our writing together to hone our craft.

About me: My name is Anke. I am a writer, communications professional and dyed-on-the-wool-foodie.
After running a busy restaurant and winebar in Dublin (Ireland), I worked as head of communications for Slow Food Germany for several years. I hold a Masters degree in Food Studies and Communication, a degree in English Literature and an Advanced Certificate in Wine and Spirits. My writing on food, society and sustainability has also been published in zitty, Slow Food Magazin, and Politico.
