In January/February 2017, I launched the first creative writing course “Introduction to Food Writing” in Berlin. It was a fun experience! Here is what the participants said:
” I already miss our weekly sessions and even though it was hard to find the time to write a piece it was great once it was done. Anke`s feedback was always very, very helpful and I think I learned a lot!” Gudrun, Berlin
Since then, I have been able to turn my idea about a food writing course into a Masters module Food Writing and Media. The module, which I am now teaching in the MA Gastronomy and Food Studies at the Technological University Dublin, includes both the practical experience of different types of food writing with the critical study of published food writing and food in literature.
For the record, this was the creative writing course I held in Berlin.
Introduction to Food Writing – Jan/Feb 2017, Berlin
“When I write of hunger, I am really writing about love and the hunger for it.”
M.F.K. Fisher, The Gastronomical Me
Are you passionate about food, and want to make your thoughts and experiences come alive on the page? Are you curious about the different styles and formats in which people write about food? Then join my Course: Introduction to Food Writing this coming January in Berlin (Germany)!
Food is deeply embedded in our lives and imaginations. There is something that makes the memory of home rise up with the steam of boiled potatoes, and makes us see the world in a dish of curry. We exchange secrets like trading cards about the greengrocer whose peaches melt on our tongues like pieces of sunshine, and the restaurant that seems like a place in our heart. We yearn for our grandmother’s cake that did not just taste of vanilla and almonds, but of her kitchen, her apron, her smile.
In this course, you will get to know different formats of food writing – memoirs, essays, travel writing, reviews, recipe writing – and work on your personal style and focus in the diverse world of food. We will read and discuss the writing of celebrated authors such as M.F.K. Fisher, Michael Pollan and Elizabeth David, and investigate their methods.
You will learn the craft of tasting and practice writing delightful memories, mouth-watering recipes, and thoughtful commentaries on food, food culture and the food system. We will workshop our writing together to hone our craft.
